We decided that even though this was for fun we needed the right combination of characters to be at least somewhat competitive. And that being somewhat competitive would be more fun than just having our “bot” kicked around the arena.
To that end we formed with a mechanic, an electronic tech, a spokesman, a welder, and the obligatory sponsor/fan.
Quite a few people to build a few “Hobby weights” robots but hey that’s what it takes. Too bad they only give you one pit pass for these weight class.
For now, we’ll stick to the “Sub-Lightweight” category of bots. Basically they’re just easier to transport, take up less bench space when you need to work on them, and easier to move around.
We’re also trying our hand at the smaller weight classes, i.e. Ants and Beetle weights (1 & 3 lbers). This is one of the fastest growing segments of the robot community. It’s nice when you can begin and end a tournament in under 4 hours. Sozbots & Sacbots, the local organizing groups have it together. Our experience with them at Robolympics was very positive.
We’ll see how we move in classes; time will tell. This is an evolving team in an evolving hobby/sport.
